Changes to the Board
Lei Lani
Stelle joined the board as VP in May 1997. Lei Lani completed her Master's at
UBC in August, successfully defending her thesis on the hydrodynamics of Steller sea
lion swimming. She is originally from the Los Angeles area, a graduate of UC Santa Cruz
in 1994. She has now returned to California to start a PhD with CERF at UCLA. She will
be working with Dr. Bill Hamner on the population dynamics of the mysid shrimp, our
grey whales' primary prey.
Michelle
Kinzel-Porter joined the board as VP-USA in February 1998. She takes over from
Raja Gupta, who is now enjoying teaching high school in southeastern BC. She first
joined CERF in 1996 to do a comparison of grey whale behaviours between the breeding
grounds in Baja and the feeding grounds off BC. She is now running our grey whale
adoption programme, and introducing grey
whale biology to elementary school students in the San Diego area.
Liam
Alexander Megill was born on February 12th, 1997, to Willliam and Susanne,
and immediately assumed the role of Chief Anklebiter. He spent a good part of his
first summer aboard Dagon on the Central Coast, generally keeping us all on
our toes..

CERF wouldn't be the organisation it has become without the indefatigable efforts of its crews. Most of our crew have been selected from among our guests. Others have joined us from various universities around the world to do independent research projects. Some of their work is reported later in this edition.
